The Japanese authorities on Tuesday released Greg Kelly, the former representative of Nissan, a US national executive who has been held for more than a month on charges of financial irregularities. A Tokyo court has rejected a request by prosecutors to renew his detention.

Kelly left the Tokyo detention center with his lawyer, Yuichi Kitamura, in a taxi around 10:45 pm local time (1345 GMT), a witness said. The lawyer's office did not respond to a request to comment on his release.

The Tokyo District Court earlier ruled today to release Kelly and continue the imprisonment of Nissan's president, Carlos Ghosn. The court said Kelly paid in cash a guarantee of 70 million yen ($ 640,000).
