The Berlin firefighters were called to help two drunks. But when they arrived at the pub in the bourgeois district of Charlottenburg, they were mobbed, spit on and kicked. An approximately 20-member group had been waiting for the rescuers, the Berlin police said.

The group was immediately aggressive. The firefighters, according to the police, did not get through to the two helpless men lying on the ground. The forces then withdrew from the scene.

"When the ambulance was driven away, a bottle was thrown out of the group and damaged it," the police said. Only after more fire and police forces arrived, the situation calmed down - and the two drunks were treated.
