Border service officers of the Federal Security Service of Russia, together with environmentalists, veterinarians and cetacean captive experts, conducted an inspection in Srednyaya Bay, which contains 11 killer whales and 87 belugas. As a result of the examination, wounds and skin changes were found in some animals. The condition of marine mammals causes concern among specialists because they are subject to constant stress, especially when ice is broken in their enclosures. Moreover, if belugas are adapted to be in such cold water, then killer whales are not so cold-resistant animals. One individual has suspected pneumonia. About this "whale prison" became known in November 2018. The IC of Russia opened a criminal case under the article on the illegal extraction of aquatic biological resources. Due to the investigation, the return of animals to the wild is delayed.
