Japan saw its first partial eclipse in 2019 and the first eclipse in Tokyo in three years.

Japan's National Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) said the moon partially blocked the sun on Wednesday morning. Around 40 percent of the sun was blocked by the moon in the northern city of Sapporo, while only about 30 percent of the sun was blocked in Tokyo.

Japanese citizens gathered to watch the phenomenon after wearing glasses to protect the eyes, the agency said.

While the General Astronomical Observatory noted that Japanese citizens will be able to see another solar eclipse again on December 26.
