After an accident in a platinum mine in South Africa, about 1,800 miners are stuck in the depths. If the problem can not be rectified in the short term, there is still the possibility to free the workers on an adjacent mine, said a spokesman for the mining company Sibanye Stillwater.

According to the report, at midday rails had fallen into the elevator shaft, bringing the workers into the tunnels. The shaft will now be checked for damage, it said. Nobody was hurt. The spokesman said it was hoped to get the buddy of the morning shift out of the mine northwest of Johannesburg that evening.

The company did not want to haul the workers over the adjacent mine because they have underground water and can wait in sheltered bays.
