The possibly loneliest duck in the world is dead. The male animal named Trevor, which was home to no conspecifics on the small Pacific island of Niue, was allegedly a victim to a dog, the British broadcaster BBC reported.

Trevor had probably landed and stayed on Niue a year ago. Nobody knows exactly where he came from. It is believed that he flew the nearly 2,500 kilometers from New Zealand. That's why he got the first name of the New Zealand Parliament President Trevor Mallard. But it is also possible that he actually comes from Tonga or another Pacific island.

"He turned up on Niue in January of last year after a heavy storm, we think he flew here," said Rae Findlay, head of the Niue Chamber of Commerce, and operator of Trevor's Facebook page.

Fire department provided enough water

On Niue, an island with just over 1,500 residents, Trevor was the only duck ever, according to the locals. She lived in a big puddle - there are no bigger rivers or lakes on Niue. The local fire department made sure that Trevor always had enough water.

In the meantime, there were also considerations to put the duck a duck to the side. That never happened. According to Findlay, Trevor became friends with neighbors living around the puddle: a rooster, a chicken and a weka, a native bird.

The news of his death was received with regret on the island associated with New Zealand. Findlay said, "He has so many hearts to his credit, we'll miss him."

His namesake, politician Trevor Mallard, also expressed to the people of Niue "the greatest concern of the New Zealand Parliament". Mallard is called mallard in English.
