Police released singer R Kelly from a Chicago detention center after paying more than $ 161,000 in arrears for his children from a former wife, ending his second detention in two weeks after his previous arrest in connection with sexual assault charges, police said.

The 52-year-old singer was arrested on Wednesday for failing to pay for three children from his ex-wife Andrea Lee. Cook County Police Chief NR Kelly will have to pay the full amount for his release, said Cook County Police Chief NK Kelly.

Sam Randall, a spokesman for the police chief's office, said in a telephone interview yesterday that the source of the money paid was not clear, noting that the money-making section of the receipt was empty.

"The lack of identification in this position is very rare ... Usually this section of the data in the receipt is mentioned."

The celebrity news website TMS quoted sources close to Kelly as saying an anonymous donor had helped him and added that a group of his fans had greeted him when he was released from custody.

"I promise that we will forget all this ... that's all I can say now," Kelly was quoted as telling his fans.

Kelly was arrested last month and pleaded not guilty to sexual assault charges against three teenagers and a woman. The American singer has denied similar charges for decades.

Kelly was tried in 2008 on charges of child pornography and acquitted the court.

Kelly paid bail on sexual assault charges on Feb. 25 and has since complained of financial problems and said in an interview with CBS that "many people" had access to his bank account and robbed him.
