The Golden Eagle award was established in 2002 by the National Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Russia, headed by director and screenwriter Vladimir Naumov. Awards are traditionally awarded in 24 categories, among which are the best Russian feature films, documentaries and animated films, the best TV movie or mini-series, the best TV series, the best foreign film in the national box office and others. Also prizes are awarded to outstanding directorial, acting and screenwriting works. According to the organizers, the award was created to support Russian cinema and “preserve the cultural identity of the foundations of national filmmaking”.

Before appearing on the list of nominees, films and series take place in a two-stage competition. First, the expert council, which forms the academy, analyzes the list of projects that have appeared during the year, after which it makes its own list of 17 films and TV shows with recommendations for each nomination. Following this shortlist is sent to members of the Presidium of the Academy, each of which must vote once in all nominations. Thus, the final list is formed: five pictures claim for the award for the best feature film, in the other categories three projects are presented. Winners are determined by anonymous voting, which is held on the eve of the ceremony.

The Golden Eagle Regulations are less demanding with regard to Russian films than other awards in the industry. So, renting out is not a prerequisite for them to get into the award list - the main thing is that the tape be completed during the year that covers the prize.

The Golden Eagle is presented annually in the first pavilion of the Mosfilm Concern at the end of January since 2003. The first ceremony was to be held on September 27, 2002, but it was canceled due to the death of actor and director Sergei Bodrov, Jr. He and the members of his film crew died a week earlier as a result of a glacier coming down in the Karmadonsk Gorge, where Bodrov's Svyaznoy was filmed.

The record for the number of received figurines is divided by two films: “The Island” by Pavel Lungin and “The Legend No. 17” by Nikolay Lebedev, released in 2006 and 2013, respectively. Both films won prizes in six categories, three of which coincided: “Best Feature Film”, “Best Screenplay” and “Best Supporting Actor”.

Over the 17 years of the award's existence, films like “The Cuckoo” by Alexander Rogozhkin, “Return” and “Elena” by Andrey Zvyagintsev, “The 9th Company” by Fyodor Bondarchuk, “12” and “Sunstroke” by Nikita Mikhalkov, “Styles” by Valery Todorovsky, “How I spent this summer” by Alexey Popogrebsky, “About Love” by Anna Melikyan, “Paradise” by Andrei Konchalovsky and others.
