Philippine President Rodrigo Duterti, Canada, has been in a long-running dispute over Canadian waste exported to his country and threatened to return it.

Manila has made several diplomatic protests to Canada over tonnes of waste shipped to the Philippines between 2013 and 2014.

Canada explained that the shipment was a business deal and was not supported by the government.

"For the Canadian garbage, I want to make a boat," Dutherty told officials overnight. "It would be better if they pulled this thing, otherwise I would take him back to Canada and dump them there."

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Canadian embassy in Manila said officials from both countries were working on waste disposal issues "with a view to reaching a timely decision" and "to ensure that the materials are treated in an environmentally responsible manner."

A Canadian company transferred to the Philippines between 2013 and 2014 more than 100 containers discovered by local customs authorities that it consists of garbage including kitchen waste and diapers for adults.
