Six out of ten people in Germany feel stressed out. And almost as many say that the stress they are experiencing has increased noticeably over the past three years. These results from the Stress Survey 2016 of the Techniker Krankenkasse are sobering: that the psychological and physical stress of time pressure, workload in the job and double burden of family and work is increasing, including suffering more and more people.

But we are not helpless at the mercy of stress. Occupational physicians and industrial psychologists show ways how to deal with stress competently - and thus better cares for itself.

"If you want to change your approach to pressure and stress, you can start with two things," says psychologist and psychotherapist Julia Scharnhorst, who advises companies on issues related to workplace health management. "On the one hand, it helps to register and gradually reduce existing burdens, for example, too much work, and on the other, to find and use more behaviors that relax and strengthen." Thus, according to Scharnhorst, one could decisively increase one's own stress competence.

Exclusively for SPIEGEL WISSEN and SPIEGEL ONLINE, Scharnhorst has developed a "Coaching for more stress competence". Over a period of eight weeks, each week we will introduce you to a small exercise that will teach you in practice how to deal with the stress of serenity, how to reduce existing stress in small steps and how to build up habits that give you energy and relaxation.
