The popular with tourists Greek holiday island Hydra is on Monday the second day in a row without water and electricity. The hassles for vacationers and residents had begun early Sunday morning, when the failure of a power line caused a major power outage. Then the water supply collapsed.

In the picturesque harbor of Hydra, the night of Monday had a spooky atmosphere. There was only light from kerosene or flashlights and candles. Hundreds of tourists have left, reported hoteliers. Frozen food and ice have thawed, fresh fish must be thrown away, it was said.

"A water supply ship of the Greek Navy came at night and today we are expecting two generators as well", said the mayor of the island, Giorgos Koukoudakis, on Greek radio on Monday morning. He expressed the hope that the problem could be solved in the next few hours.

Where exactly the problem in the electricity grid is, according to the electricity distributor is still unclear. The island is powered by the mainland with a cable on the seabed. Here the problem is suspected.

Hydra is located about 65 kilometers south of Piraeus and just under seven kilometers off the east coast of the Peloponnese peninsula. The island is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece. Only on Wednesday had a blackout for three hours paralyzed parts of Athens.
