The police chief of the French town of Rodez died after the knife attack of a man. The father of three children had succumbed to his injuries, said Mayor Christian Teyssèdre.

The suspected attacker had been arrested shortly after the crime near the town hall, it was said by the police. The motive of the offender is unclear according to local media.

According to the mayor, the man had already appeared in criminal law. He had therefore tried in April to damage the door of the town hall. In Rodez sits the prefecture of the administrative district Aveyron. The city has about 25,000 inhabitants.
