The tax authorities imposed a fine of hundreds of millions of yuan against Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, the highest paid woman in China, for failing to disclose her income.

Van, 37, has disappeared from the public scene over the past three months, with reports that tax authorities are investigating her.

According to the South China Morning Post, Van was reportedly detained at a controlled residence in a particular location in Jiangsu Province until it was moved to Beijing two weeks ago.

Her disappearance has given rise to more speculation in China and the Western media, too, because of her work in the X-Men series and her fame in China.

"The actress avoided criminal charges, but now she has to pay an unpaid personal income tax and taxes on her production company worth 883 million 946 yuan (128 million US dollars)," the official Xinhua news agency said.

On Wednesday, Van issued an apology on the Web site. She said she felt shame and guilt and promised to repay her money. "Without the good policies of the party and the state, and without the love of the citizens, it would not have been to be Fan Bingbing," she said.
