"If you are over 50 or younger, but you have not practiced sports for the last 20 years, you should first visit your doctor before you go to the gym again," says Lotus Herbert, president of the German Health Association.

Once the doctor has reassured you about your health, it is advisable to receive specialized training before you start exercising, so as to avoid any harm from performing any exercise in the wrong way.

"One thinks anyone can practice jogging, but there is running and then running there," he said.

Being trained by a professional for a period can help him know his limits.
