At least 14 people were injured early in the morning when a passenger train derailed in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

Railways spokesman Amit Malvia said 12 trains from the Burva Express train derailed in the Kanpur area at around 0130 hours local time (2000 GMT Friday).

The train was on a journey from the northern city of Prairaga to the capital New Delhi.

"All the passengers who were trapped in the train cars were taken out quickly, and there are four people among those seriously injured," senior police official Alok Seng told reporters.

Television footage showed at least three vehicles overturned and damaged.

Malvia said the cause of the accident was not immediately known, saying the railway had ordered an investigation.
