"Pioneer of the American style": accolade for Ralph Lauren

In the future, Ralph Lauren can be addressed as: "Honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire". He is the first American fashion designer to be named "Member of the Order of the British Empire", the British Embassy in the United States announced via Twitter with:

The "Knight of Honor" is the second highest of five orders of the Order, founded by King George V in 1917 to honor those who made a significant contribution during the First World War. These days, it is primarily British personalities and civilians who have made the kingdom worthy of him.

Lauren was honored for having made a significant cultural and economic contribution to forging transatlantic ties, according to a statement by the British Consul General in New York, Anthony Phillipson. He continues, "For half a century, Mr. Lauren has been at the forefront of American style and the fashion industry worldwide." He also contributed to the public health of both countries through generous donations for cancer research.

Normally, the elevation to the non-hereditary peerage (nobility) is associated with the two highest levels. Since Lauren but US citizen and is not a subject of the British crown, he remains the "sir" denied.

Supervision of the Knights of State ranks with the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood in London. The British Foreign Office is responsible for members of the diplomatic choir or foreigners. Honorary members are usually appointed on the proposal of the Foreign Minister. The award of a knighthood requires formally the approval of the Queen.

The actual Order of Merit Lauren is expected to receive in the coming year at a ceremony. The award is given twice a year, on New Year's Day and on June 8, the official birthday of the head of state.

Lauren is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the fashion empire founded by him this year. He is already in possession of the key of the city of New York and a member of the French Legion of Honor. In September, his childhood wish to throw the first ball in a New York Yankees baseball game also came true. "I've been everywhere, talking to heads of state, but that's probably the most exciting moment for me," he said at the time.
