Until the fifth installment of "Mission: Impossible," Paramount engaged a different director. Then came Christopher McQuarrie, who staged Tom Cruise in episodes five and six, perfectly orchestrating the action. Above all, "Fallout", which came to the cinemas last year, became a sensational success (read the SPIEGEL ONLINE review here). Now the studio has committed the successful duo for two sequels, as the industry magazine "Variety" reports.

Director McQuarrie will write both the scripts for the two parts, as well as directing, it says. And Tom Cruise will return to M: I as Agent Ethan Hunt, as he immediately confirmed on Twitter:

This year, the filming of both sequels to start as a back-to-back production, ie directly behind each other or even together. That saves time and money.

In the summer of 2021 and 2022, the films will then come to the cinemas. A start later this year has been avoided so as not to interfere with Paramount's other major project with Tom Cruise. For the current year, a "top gun" follow-up directed by Joseph Kosinski is planned.
