Award History

The Nika Professional Cinema Award was established in 1987 by members of the Secretariat of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR as an analogue of the prestigious American Academy Award. The initiators of the creation of the award were made by Yuli Gusman and Viktor Merezhko.

Initially, candidates for the award were determined by free voting, in which all representatives of the Union of Cinematographers participated. Later, the scheme was changed, and the winners were chosen by secret ballot: only members of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts could take part in it.

Prize winners are awarded a bronze statuette of the goddess of victory Nike. The look of the gilded winged figure was created by sculptor Sergei Mikulsky.

The number of nicknames has changed over the course of 32 years. At various times, documentary and non-fiction films claimed separately for the award. In 2003, the nomination “The Best Film of the CIS and Baltic States” was established.

The absolute champions in terms of the number of Nika awards are three films, Taurus, Horde and It Is Hard to Be God, each of which received seven statuettes. In turn, Horde single-handedly heads the list with the largest number of nominations for Nika - there are 11 of them in its account.

Among filmmakers, the most awards from director Alexander Sokurov - he received six statuettes. Five figurines marked the work of cinematographer Yuri Klimenko and screenwriter Yuri Arabov.

At the last 31st award ceremony the evening's victor was Boris Khlebnikov’s painting “Arrhythmia”. The film was awarded awards in five categories - for the best feature film, directorial work, screenplay, as well as for the best male and female roles (Alexander Yatsenko and Irina Gorbacheva).
