ADNOC Refining, the joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), the Italian company Eni, and the Austrian company OMV, is preparing to complete the first phase of the waste heat recovery project in the public utilities unit in the Ruwais area.

ADNOC said in a statement yesterday that the waste heat recovery project, which was launched in 2018 at a cost of 2.2 billion dirhams (600 million dollars), aims to reuse the waste heat generated by the public utility unit in Ruwais to add about 230 megawatts of electricity. per day, enough to supply electricity to hundreds of thousands of homes.

According to the statement, the project will produce about 62,400 cubic meters of distilled water per day.

The project will contribute to increasing energy production and enhancing the thermal efficiency of the unit by 30% without causing any additional emissions of carbon dioxide.

The first phase of the project, which includes the commissioning of two new boilers and turbines, is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year, while the second phase, which includes two additional boilers, will be completed in mid-2023.

Abdullah Attia Al-Masabi, CEO of ADNOC Refining, said: “The waste heat recovery project reflects our permanent commitment to finding innovative ways to improve the efficiency of our operations and ensure their sustainability. It is essential to the expansion and development plans of Ruwais, which are currently being implemented in line with ADNOC’s integrated 2030 strategy for smart growth.”

The ADNOC project was designed to recover waste heat, with the aim of reusing the exhaust heat from operating gas turbines in the utility unit, which is currently released into the atmosphere, to produce steam that is later used to produce electricity.

The waste heat recovery project is one of many strategic carbon reduction initiatives from ADNOC's operations, and builds on the company's long-term leadership in the environment.

 Climate Neutrality

ADNOC is among the world's least carbon-intensive oil and gas producers, and the company is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030, in line with the UAE's Climate Neutrality 2050 initiative.

The waste heat recovery project was launched in 2018 at a cost of 2.2 billion dirhams.
