ADNOC Refining, the joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Italy's Eni and Austria's OMV, is preparing to complete the first phase of a waste heat recovery project at the public utility unit in Ruwais.

The Waste Heat Recovery Project, launched in 2018, at a cost of 2.2 billion dirhams ($600 million), aims to reuse waste heat generated by the Ruwais public utility unit to add about 230 megawatts of electricity per day, enough to supply hundreds of thousands of homes. electrocuted;

This project will also produce about 62,400 cubic meters of distilled water per day.

The project will contribute to increasing the energy production and enhancing the thermal efficiency of the unit by 30% without causing any additional emissions of carbon dioxide.

It is planned to complete the first phase of the project, which includes operating two new boilers and turbines before the end of the year, while the second phase, which includes two additional boilers, will be completed in mid-2023.

Abdullah Attia Al-Masabi, CEO of ADNOC Refining, said: The waste heat recovery project reflects our constant commitment to finding innovative ways to improve the efficiency of our operations and ensure their sustainability. This project will achieve a quantum leap in the production of electricity and water in the public utilities unit. It is also a mainstay for the expansion and development plans of Ruwais, which are currently being implemented in line with ADNOC's 2030 integrated growth strategy. smart".

The ADNOC Waste Heat Recovery Project is designed to reuse the exhaust heat generated from operating the gas turbines in the utility unit, which is currently being released into the atmosphere, to produce steam that is then used to produce electricity.

ADNOC is among the world's least carbon-intensive oil and gas producers, and the company is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030, in line with the UAE's Climate Neutrality 2050 initiative

. The waste heat recovery project is one of several strategic initiatives to reduce Carbon is from ADNOC's operations and is dependent on the company's long-term leadership in the environment.

This includes a number of significant achievements such as the implementation of a routine zero-flaring policy in the early 2000s and the establishment of the first commercial underground carbon capture and storage facility in the Middle East in 2016.

During the past 12 months, ADNOC has announced several partnerships to reduce carbon on a large scale of its operations, by providing 100% of the energy that the company needs in its operations through clean nuclear and solar energy, and a project to establish a network to transmit high-voltage direct current electricity under the surface The sea connects ADNOC's offshore oil and gas facilities to the Abu Dhabi Energy Corporation's onshore electricity grid.
