Queen Elizabeth has died aged 96.

She was a hugely popular regent in Britain and now she will be honored with an opening minute's silence at Manchester United and West Ham's Europa League and Conference League home games at 9pm tonight.

"Manchester United shares the grief with the whole country and our thoughts go out to the entire royal family.

We will hold a minute's silence before the game where both us and Real Sociedad will wear black mourning bands, the flags at Old Trafford will be at half-mast," the club said in a statement on its website.

Matches may be postponed

Virtually every club in the English leagues has expressed their grief on social media and a minute's silence was observed at half-time in Arsenal's Europa League meeting with Zurich.

When Princess Diana died, domestic football matches were postponed.

Whether it will happen even now is unclear, but the Championships (the second highest division on the men's side) website says that they will hold discussions with both the government and others in the sports sector.

"An appropriate statement will be made as soon as possible," it writes.

Event is cancelled

But it is not only football that has been affected.

The cricket match between England and South Africa, which was to be played on Friday, is cancelled.

The English Cricket Association announces that it will come back about other planned matches in the future.

The European Tour's PGA Championship, which is being played at Wentworth in England, has suspended today's play as a result of the announcement.

"Following the announcement that her majesty Queen Elizabeth has passed away, today's continued play is suspended.

We will provide updates and guidelines going forward," the tour writes in a statement.
