In 2006, the DGT in charge of Pere Navarro, current acting director of the agency in its second stage, established the points card. A method by which each driver has a fee that he will lose if he commits according to what infractions.

Any motorist with more than three years of experience has 12 points. If you are a new driver, you will have 8, as well as if you have lost the permit or license you had for having used up all your points when you get a new one.

If in three years no infraction is committed, those with 12 points may increase their initial balance by 2. If they maintain the same attitude in the next triennium, they will earn an extra one until 15. Through the following link you will know how many points you have left. From the gain to the deduction, there are different penalties that lead to the loss of points:

Speeding

Sanctions: between 100 and 600 euros.

Points: from 2 to 6.

Exceeding the speed limits of 60 km / h on urban roads and 80 km / h on interurban roads is a crime. Two out of every three interurban road sanctions are directly related to excessive speed, which is also a risk factor present in almost 20% of accidents involving victims.

Alcohol or other drugs

Sanctions: between 500 and 100 euros.

Points: from 4 to 6.

The maximum alcohol rate for novice and professional drivers is 0.15 mg / l in exhaled air. For the rest of the drivers it is 0.25 mg / l and, if they exceed 0.60 mg / l, it is a crime. Of other drugs, any presence in the body is grounds for sanction. One in three deceased drivers had consumed alcohol and / or drugs.

Mobile use

Sanctions: between 500 and 1000 euros.

Points: 3.

While driving, using a hands-free mobile phone, reading or sending messages or using headphones (even if only one) is a penalty. Also the manual use of browsers or other electronic devices. A quarter of accidents are caused by distracted driving or lack of attention.

Not wear a helmet

Sanctions: 200 euros.

Points: 3 points.

The motorist will be responsible if the passenger does not wear a helmet or does not have the required minimum age. 11% of deceased moped users did not use the helmet.

Belt and child restraint system (SRI)

Sanctions: 200 euros.

Points: 3.

The belt must be used in all seats and be properly fastened. You cannot use clamps or systems that alter or block its operation. The driver is responsible (with the corresponding withdrawal of points) if a child travels without SRI (Child Restraint System). One in five adults killed in an interurban road accident did not wear a seat belt. In the city, the death toll increases to two in five

STOP and red traffic light

Sanctions: 200 euros.

Points: 4.

The red traffic light and the STOP signal always stop. In the case of STOP, this obligation also affects road markings painted on the road, although there is no vertical sign. Not respecting the priority of passage is one of the factors with the greatest presence in road accidents.

Forbidden rail or opposite direction

Sanctions: between 200 and 500 euros.

Points: 6.

Traffic in the opposite direction or for prohibited lanes is a very serious infraction. It is the direct cause of 1% of deaths due to traffic accidents.

Safety distance

Sanctions: 200 euros.

Points: 4.

The driver always has to maintain a safe distance with the vehicle in front that allows him to brake without collision. This distance must be greater at more speed or with adverse weather. Do not keep it as a direct cause in one of every six accidents.

Cyclist / Pedestrian Priority

Sanctions: 200 euros.

Points: up to 4.

Cyclists have priority of passage with respect to motor vehicles when driving on a bike lane, cycle path or properly marked road. Together with pedestrians, they are the most vulnerable users. Two out of three dead pedestrians are run over in the city, unlike cyclists, where the same percentage of deaths occur in interurban roads.
