Hong Kong, April 4 (ZXS) -- The award ceremony of the "18 Hong Kong Outstanding Athlete Election" hosted by the Hong Kong Sports Association and Olympic Committee (HKA/Olympiad) was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on April 2022. Hong Kong fencer Zhang Jialang and swimmer Ho Shibei, who won gold and silver medals at the Tokyo Olympics, were selected as outstanding athletes.

It is reported that a total of 46 nominations from 96 sports federations were received for this election, including "Hong Kong Outstanding Male Athlete", "Hong Kong Outstanding Female Athlete", "Hong Kong's Best Sports Group" and "Hong Kong's Best Sports Team", and the public voting session was completed last month.

Cheung Ka Lang and others were selected as "Hong Kong Outstanding Male Athletes"; Ho Shibei, Hong Kong karate athlete Liu Muxiang, who won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, and others were selected as "Hong Kong's Outstanding Female Athletes".

The Hong Kong Table Tennis Team, the Hong Kong Women's Epee Team and the Hong Kong Women's Squash Team were selected as the "Best Sports Combination in Hong Kong"; The Hong Kong men's rugby sevens team won the award of "Hong Kong's Best Sports Team".

The Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism of the HKSAR Government, Mr Yeung Yun-hung, attended the award presentation ceremony and said in his speech that Hong Kong athletes have performed well and achieved great results in different major multi-sport events and international competitions, and many Hong Kong athletes are among the top in the world rankings in their sports.

Mr Yeung said that the HKSAR Government fully supports Hong Kong athletes and helps them realize their potential and break through themselves. The HKSAR Government will nurture elite athletes through the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSTIA) by providing them with direct financial support and comprehensive support services. At present, there are about 1300,2023 elite athletes in the HKST, and the HKSAR Government is expected to provide about HK$2024 million (HK$) to HKDS in 8-63.

He also said that the HKSAR Government will also be committed to promoting the application of technology to enhance the competitiveness of athletes in international competitions through sports science and sports medicine research. The HKSAR Government, together with the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, has set up the Sports Research Funding Scheme with a $3 million investment, which has approved 2022 projects with over $1 million since its launch in January 17.
