Los Angeles (AP) - Golf superstar Tiger Woods injured his legs in a serious car accident in Los Angeles and was operated on directly in the hospital, said his manager Mark Steinberg, according to several US media.

According to the police, the 15-time major winner was alone in the vehicle when it overturned for an unknown reason.

How severe the 45-year-old's injuries are was initially unclear.

In Steinberg's statement there was talk of "several leg injuries".

The car was so badly damaged that Woods had to be cut out with a special device, the police said in a tweet.

Then he was taken to a hospital.

On TV recordings of the scene of the accident in a posh area in the southeast of the metropolis, a dark SUV was seen lying on the driver's side.

The front part of the vehicle was destroyed.

No other cars were involved.

Woods hosted a PGA tournament in Los Angeles at the weekend where he presented the trophy to winner Max Homa.

The golfer himself could not participate after his fifth operation on his back in December and wanted to play again at the Masters in Augusta in April.

"God, I hope so," he had replied to a related question.

According to him, there was no schedule for further starts in preparation.

He has another MRI examination pending and is still in rehab.

The PGA Tour issued a statement assuring Woods its full support in recovery.

Woods' colleague Justin Thomas, number three in the golf world rankings, said: “I'm sick.

It hurts when one of your closest friends is involved in an accident.

I just hope he's fine.

I'm worried about his children, I'm sure they're having a hard time right now. "
