Patrice Vergriete was widely re-elected mayor of Dunkirk - PHILIPPE HUGUEN / AFP

It's a sad record. With a rate of 54%, abstention reached peaks in Hauts-de-France. Never had a municipal election seen so few voters mobilized in the region.

In the anxiety-provoking context of the coronavirus epidemic, a majority of people therefore preferred to stay at home rather than taking risks. A weak mobilization which mainly benefited the outgoing mayors.

The premium for leavers in major cities in the region

Whether in Dunkirk, Calais, Valenciennes, Arras or Boulogne-sur-Mer, most of the major cities in the region have re-elected their outgoing mayor. In Tourcoing, Gérald Darmanin, re-elected with 60.89% of the vote, did not suffer from his status as minister. The mayor would now like to combine his two functions.

In the mining basin, if the National Gathering has largely failed in Denain and Lens, it has achieved success in Hénin-Beaumont. Re-elected with nearly 74% of the votes, Steeve Briois confirms his presence in this town of 26,000 inhabitants.
