The former president of the Generalitat of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont announced today his intention to seek a "negotiation" with the Government of Spain, as well as the "political unity" of Catalan independence workers.

Speaking to EL MUNDO, Puigdemont denied that the possibilities of dialogue between the Catalan independence leaders and the Spanish State have been exhausted. «Today we have made precisely, from the Consell de la República, an offer of a platform for negotiation. Let's see if they accept it, ”he told us, after leading a public conference in the city of Lugano, in Switzerland, on the theme of“ identity ”. Puigdemont added that what can be achieved through that negotiation "depends on the Spanish Government."

Likewise, the former president of the Generalitat answered “yes” to our question about whether he is satisfied with the popular response to the call for unity among Catalan independentists, made by the organizers of the Diada last Wednesday. Puigdemont himself assured us that he also yearns for the political unity of the Catalan independence parties, included in possible early legislative elections in Spain. "I am working for it," said the one who remains a fugitive from Spanish justice for the alleged crime of rebellion.

This conference was organized within the scope of the Endorfine Festival, organized, among others, by the City of Lugano. Apparently she was not attended by other independence leaders, nor siquera from other communities in Spain, but dozens of men and women of Catalan origin, who applauded Puigdemont several times, and at the end of the act sung the segadors or took selfies with him former president of the Generalitat.

Even so, in the midst of yellow and stellar ties, a man wearing the Red T-shirt and displaying the flag of Spain could be noticed. We could also see a woman who, despite the push by the politician's companions, showed a sign in French, in which she questioned the representativeness of Puigdemont, due to the non-majority percentage of participation in the illegal referendum of 1 October 2017 on the independence of Catalonia. Among the audience of the conference were also Giancarlo Pagliarini, former Italian minister, former member of the Northern League and supporter of federalism, as well as some militants for a (greater) autonomy of the Italian Veneto region, who had a copy signed by Puigdemont of the regional flag that carries the historic Lion of San Marcos, emblem of the old Republic of Venice.

In about an hour and a half of the conference, Puigdemont in Lugano said, among other things, that "it is difficult" to define Catalan identity, because it is "plural." According to the former president of the Generalitat, "identity is something in motion" throughout a person's life, also depending on their migrations. "We (in Catalonia) - declared Puigdemont - do not try to make a republic based on an ethnic principle."
