In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Congolese are still waiting for the decision of the Constitutional Court on the electoral disputes of the presidential election of December 30. The judges have until Monday, midnight, to decide. According to several sources, they could decide this Saturday, January 19 to validate the results of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), to invalidate part of the poll or even ask for a recount of votes. In this context, the African Union (AU) called Thursday night for the suspension of the proclamation of the final results of these elections. An unprecedented position.

The last speech on the UN side is from the organization's general secretary, Antonio Guterres, who spoke on Friday.

" We now hope that the electoral process in the Democratic Republic of the Congo will end without violence in full respect of the will of the Congolese people and the legal and constitutional rules of the country, " he said.

The diplomat also commented on this unprecedented position of the African Union. The AU has, indeed, called for the suspension of the final results of the elections on Thursday evening and announced the sending of a delegation to Kinshasa to try to find a solution to the political crisis.

The African Union says it has serious doubts about the provisional results announced by the CENI. However, for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the African Union did not speak out as an institution. According to Antonio Guterres, this initiative was " a summit of a group of countries, invited by the president of the AU ", in this case Paul Kagame, the head of the Rwandan state.

Thus, the United Nations seems rather withdrawn and this position may seem paradoxical if one refers to the numerous cases of fraud, corruption and violation of human rights, documented by the UN during the electoral process.

These allegations never really come back to the Security Council. It can be said, Antonio Guterres is walking on eggs facing a divided Security Council and threats issued by the Congolese president.

Recall that in September, President Joseph Kabila had demanded before the UN General Assembly, a plan for the withdrawal of peacekeepers (Monusco) from his country is developed by March 2019.
