Fighting in the east of the DRC: Angola evokes a possible meeting between Kagame and Tshisekedi

The situation in eastern DRC is still the subject of intense diplomatic negotiations while on the ground, clashes are intensifying between the M23, supported by Rwanda according to the UN and Kinshasa, and the Congolese armed forces .

On Monday, Angolan President Joao Lourenço, African Union mediator in this matter, received the Rwandan president in Luanda and, according to the Angolan authorities, a meeting between Paul Kagamé and Félix Thsisekedi could take place soon.

It was Tété Antonio, the Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs, who made the announcement on Monday following the meeting between Angolan President

João Lourenço

and Rwandan President

Paul Kagame

“It was agreed

,” he declared to the press

, “that President Kagame would agree to meet President Tshisekedi on a date to be indicated by the mediator

,” in this case Joao Lourenço.

The Angolan minister, however, took care to specify that each party still had to

“work at this stage”

.

The Rwandan presidency has not confirmed such a commitment, although it affirmed on its X account that

“the heads of state had agreed on the key measures to be taken to tackle the root causes of the conflict

. ”

Félix Tshisekedi

would have given his agreement in principle to meet his Rwandan counterpart, according to a statement by Tété Antonio taken up on February 27 by the Congolese presidency.

The latter recalled that day that President Tshisekedi had set several conditions for such a meeting to be held.

A new interview between the two men therefore seems to be in the pipeline.

Their last meeting was a failure.

On February 16 in Addis Ababa, on the sidelines of the AU summit, a mini-summit on the situation in eastern DRC 

ended

, according to several sources, with an exchange of invectives between Félix Tshisekedi and Paul Kagame.
