It is winter, and in the shade of the mountains or slopes in Laifeng County, Hubei Province, one can often see patches of lush green seedlings swaying in the breeze.

"This is Polygonatum. We are planting nearly 10,000 mu of Polygonatum, and the average income per mu can reach 60,000 to 70,000 yuan (RMB, the same below)." Recently, Hu Wenxiang, a major planter of Polygonatum in Laifeng County, Hubei Province, told reporters.

In the eyes of local villagers, Huang Jing can produce "gold".

Polygonatum, commonly known as tiger ginger, is a product of the same kind of medicine and food, and a major characteristic industry in Laifeng County.

Since the beginning of this year, the county has incorporated Polygonatum into its leading industry for rural revitalization, and encourages farmers to expand the planting area of Polygonatum and further process it.

Hu Wenxiang, 52, used to be a car transport driver and often ran to the Feng-Guang long-distance passenger line.

Occasionally, Hu Wenxiang discovered at the Qingping Chinese Medicinal Material Wholesale Market in Guangzhou that Polygonatum is very popular, and people in Guangzhou use it for soup and cooking.

In Hu Wenxiang's hometown, Laifeng, Huang Jing was unpopular and had no market.

Laifeng County has an average elevation of 680 meters, and the climate is warm and humid throughout the year, which is very suitable for planting Polygonatum.

"Why not sell Laifeng Huangjing to Guangzhou?" Hu Wenxiang thought.

In 1998, he sold long-distance sleeper buses, learned the processing technology of Huang Jing, and bought processing equipment.

At first, he bought Polygonatum at a price of 1.4 to 1.6 yuan per kilogram, and sold it to Guangzhou at a price of 7 to 8 yuan per kilogram after processing.

In half a year, he made 20,000 yuan.

The villagers did not understand Hu Wenxiang's actions, nor were they optimistic about it.

"The driver earns more than farming. Why do you work so hard?" In the face of everyone's doubts, Hu Wenxiang did not give up.

With limited resources of wild Polygonatum, Hu Wenxiang devoted himself to studying how to "transplant it from the wild."

In 2007, he imitated the techniques of planting Gastrodia and Houttuynia to cultivate wild Polygonatum. 50 kg of wild Polygonatum seeds produced 500 kg of fresh Polygonatum.

In 2012, he expanded the planting scale of Polygonatum to 20 acres and experimented with seedlings of Polygonatum.

In mid-August this year, Hu Wenxiang received an order for 50 tons of Huangjing products from a customer in Bozhou, Anhui.

He told reporters that Huang Jingmiao was particularly popular this year, with tens of thousands of plants being sent to all parts of the country every day.

Before that, most of the villagers in Laifeng mainly planted corn and potatoes. Under the leadership of Hu Wenxiang, everyone began to expand the planting of Polygonatum, and Hu Wenxiang purchased it from the villagers for further processing.

"At the highest peak, 500 tons are processed annually, and the wild Polygonatum from 8 townships in the county are sold to me." Hu Wenxiang said.

At present, Hu Wenxiang’s Polygonatum planting scale reaches 600 acres, 20 acres of Polygonatum are excavated every year, and 5 acres of Polygonatum seedlings are sold, and 8 villagers get employment nearby.

In addition, he also taught the villagers the techniques of Polygonatum planting free of charge through QQ groups, WeChat groups and other channels.

By planting Polygonatum, the wallet of Yuan Heping, a villager in Laifeng County, bulged up.

"Sold it to buyers at a price of 8-9 yuan per catty. Compared with the previous planting of potatoes and rice, the income has doubled!" he said.

It is understood that in recent years, Laifeng County has developed the Polygonatum industry as a pillar industry and established the Polygonatum Industry Association to provide subsidies to farmers who grow Polygonatum. At the same time, it continues to expand the scale of planting and extend the industrial chain.

According to Xu Yingjin, president of the Laifeng Polygonatum Industry Association, Laifeng Polygonatum has high quality and good nutrition. It is sold all over the country, with an annual output value of 50 million yuan, which has driven more than 2,000 villagers to increase their income.
