　　[Explanation] Polygonatum, commonly known as tiger ginger, is a product of the same kind of medicine and food, which is a major characteristic industry in Laifeng County, Hubei Province.

Since 2021, the county has incorporated Polygonatum into the leading industry for rural revitalization, encouraging farmers to expand the area of ​​Polygonatum planting and deep processing of Polygonatum.

In the eyes of local villagers, Huang Jing can produce "gold".

　　[Explanation] Laifeng County, Hubei Province has an average elevation of 680 meters. The climate is warm and humid throughout the year, making it very suitable for planting Polygonatum.

It is winter now, and reporters are visiting many villages in the county. In the shade of the mountains or slopes, one can often see patches of lush green plants swaying in the breeze.

　　[Explanation] Hu Wenxiang, 52 years old this year, is a well-known polygonatum planter in Laifeng County. He used to be a car transport driver and runs the long-distance passenger line from Feng to Guangzhou all the year round.

Occasionally, Hu Wenxiang discovered that Polygonatum is very popular at the Qingping Chinese Medicinal Material Wholesale Market in Guangzhou, and his hometown is very suitable for planting Polygonatum.

　　[Explanation] Under his leadership, everyone began to plant Polygonatum on a large scale, and Hu Wenxiang purchased it from the villagers for further processing.

The annual processing volume of wild Polygonatum from 8 townships in the county is 500 tons at its peak.

　　Originally, our place was a large mountainous area, and it was relatively poor. Basically, there was no fixed income. Originally, we just sent them (Huang Jing) and they didn’t grow them. Later, when we saw that we all made a little money, they volunteered. Just plant it, because it has a relatively high added value. Unlike other crops, if you don’t have enough added value, you won’t be able to motivate farmers to increase their income and become rich.

　　[Explanation] Due to the limited resources of wild Polygonatum, Hu Wenxiang devoted himself to studying how to transfer it from the wild.

In 2007, he imitated the techniques of planting Gastrodia and Houttuynia to cultivate wild Polygonatum. 50 kg of wild Polygonatum seeds produced 500 kg of fresh Polygonatum.

In 2012, he expanded the planting scale of Polygonatum to 20 acres and experimented with seedlings of Polygonatum.

　　[Explanation] At present, Hu Wenxiang’s Polygonatum planting scale reaches 600 mu, 20 acres of Polygonatum are harvested every year, and 5 acres of Polygonatum seedlings are sold, and 8 villagers get employment nearby.

In addition, he also taught the villagers the techniques of Polygonatum planting free of charge through QQ groups, WeChat groups and other channels.

　　During the poverty alleviation period, the government used to bring in capable people back to the village to establish cooperatives in the early stage in order to help the people alleviate poverty. At the beginning, about 57 farmers were developed, and they planted Polygonatum. Sales are getting better and better, so many farmers are also participating spontaneously. At present, we have counted that 112 households in the entire village are now planting Polygonatum.

　　[Explanation] It is understood that in recent years, Laifeng County has developed the Polygonatum industry as a pillar industry and established the Polygonatum Industry Association to provide subsidies to farmers who grow Polygonatum. At the same time, it will continue to expand the scale of planting and extend the industrial chain.

The annual output value reaches 50 million yuan, which drives more than 2,000 villagers to increase their income.
