  A few days ago, the head of the Consumer Promotion Department of the Ministry of Commerce gave an introduction on the consumer market in October 2020.

In October, driven by the National Day Golden Week and various consumption promotion activities, consumer demand was fully released, and the total amount of social zero accelerated growth, demonstrating the huge potential, strong resilience and vigor of the Chinese consumer market.

  Specifically, the consumer market in October showed five main characteristics:

  First, consumption growth has accelerated further.

The total retail sales of consumer goods in October increased by 4.3% year-on-year, and the growth rate was 1.0 percentage point higher than the previous month. It was the fastest growth rate this year and maintained growth for three consecutive months.

The sales of the 8,000 retail companies monitored by the Ministry of Commerce increased by 2.2% year-on-year, and the growth rate was 0.4 percentage points higher than the previous month, and it has grown for five consecutive months.

During the "Eleventh" Golden Week, the sales of key retail and catering companies nationwide were about 1.6 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.9%.

  Second, the consumption of automobiles and other commodities has grown rapidly.

The retail sales of goods in October was 3.4 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.8%, and the growth rate was 0.7 percentage points higher than the previous month.

Among the 15 categories of commodities of units above designated size, the growth rate of 12 categories increased to varying degrees from the previous month.

Among them, the automotive market demand is strong, sales continue to accelerate, with a year-on-year growth of 12%, and the growth rate has exceeded double digits for four consecutive months. The sales of new energy vehicles have doubled year-on-year; the sales of cosmetics and cultural office supplies increased by 18.3% and 11.7% respectively. Continued growth for 7 months; sales of clothing, footwear, daily necessities, and communication equipment accelerated their recovery, increasing by 12.2%, 11.7%, and 8.1% respectively.

  Third, the consumption of catering and other services accelerated the recovery.

Food and beverage revenue in October increased by 0.8% year-on-year, up 3.7% from the previous month, and achieved positive growth for the first time this year.

The service industry markets such as transportation, culture, sports and entertainment are vigorous, and the business activity index is at a relatively high level of 59% or more.

The national express delivery business volume reached 8 billion pieces, a year-on-year increase of 38.9%, an increase of more than 30% for 7 consecutive months.

  Fourth, online consumption continued to grow rapidly.

From January to October, the national online retail sales were 9.1 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 10.9%, an increase of 1.2 percentage points from January to September.

Among them, the online retail sales of physical goods was 7.6 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 16.0%, and the growth rate was 0.7 percentage points faster than last month, accounting for 24.2% of the total retail sales, an increase of 4.8 percentage points from the same period last year.

  Fifth, consumer prices have dropped significantly.

In October, consumer prices rose 0.5% year-on-year, 1.2 percentage points lower than the previous month, and fell below 1% for the first time since April 2017.

According to the monitoring of the Ministry of Commerce, the national wholesale pork price in October fell by 4.1% year-on-year, a drop of 34.1 percentage points from the previous month, and the first drop in 19 months since February 2019.
