More than one employee in two in the private sector is today partially unemployed in this coronavirus crisis. Or 10.2 million people, a "considerable" figure, announced Wednesday the Minister of Labor Muriel Pénicaud.

More than 6 out of 10 companies

"This morning in France, there are 10.2 million employees whose wages are paid by the State, by the Ministry of Labor, because they are on partial unemployment," said Muriel Pénicaud on BFM Business. This system, which allows the employee to be compensated up to 70% of gross salary and 84% of net salary, now concerns 820,000 companies, or more than 6 out of 10.

"This is considerable, we have never done that in our country," she continued, adding that these figures continue to increase "day by day". The coronavirus crisis has put a stop to many professional sectors, in particular the hotel and catering industry, where 9 out of 10 employees are partially unemployed, and the construction industry, where 93% of employees are also partially unemployed, has it detailed.

"We see the magnitude of the task for the return to work in the deconfinement (...) The longer the crisis lasts, the more difficult the tomorrows", added the minister, saying she wanted to "work with all professions, unions, to that work can resume gradually, fully respecting safety conditions ”.
