SVT Sport meets the Norwegian who led Sweden to its first championship gold in 20 years in Uppsala.

The men's captain is there to watch the women's international match between Sweden and Brazil.

Being out and meeting people when the handball family is gathered is part of the job.

The same handball family that had so many questions and voiced strong opinions after former great player Martin Boquist was not allowed to continue as assistant captain despite the EC success.

The issue is obviously troublesome for both the handball association and Solberg himself, but now they choose to give their view.

- From my perspective.

Both Martin and I applied for the job as national team captain.

When I got it, one of the conditions was that Martin would stay (as an assistant), I couldn't influence that.

It turned out that we are very different, we see things in different ways, have different values, look at leadership in different ways.

When we came home from the EC and I thought what can we do now to take new steps and lift Swedish handball further, the picture was that I wanted to choose my own assistant.

Someone who stood for the same values as me and believes in the leadership we have received.

For me, it is very normal that a leader at this level gets to choose his own mainstays, says Solberg.

But it may seem strange that an important leader has to stop after a gold, it seemed to work...?

- Many things have worked and others have not.

When you are at the level we are, you want to optimize everything.

For me, it was important to make this switch.

The association: "Understands if there are questions"

The decision to break Boquist's contract became a big talking point in handball Sweden.

Partly because the handball association's press release was perceived as vague and unclear.

The union now admits that the communication was not successful and that they had to investigate themselves.

- We won an EC gold, I understand if people watching feel that everything was perfect.

But we also saw that things can be better.

There were some things that weren't 100 percent.

Glenn is one person, Martin is another, they came in with different things.

Together, they have contributed to the result, but we were faced with a choice, then we chose what Glenn took to the national team, which we believe gave these results.

We believe in the work between collections that is being done now, and we believe in new perspectives.

We want to continue to be at the top and challenge for medals over time, says national team manager Hanna Fogelström.

Would you have managed the communication in the same way if you had to do it over?

- We understand that there are questions.

We must be self-critical, we want to be open but also be able to keep things to ourselves.

Here we chose to use the confidentiality vis-à-vis Martin.

It has not turned out well and we have to examine ourselves there, says the former national team player Fogelström.

Solberg pays tribute to new assistant Apelgren

After Martin Boquist quit, and then got the job as assistant captain in Norway instead, it took a few months and a lot of speculation before the replacement was presented.

Solberg and the association's choice finally landed on Michael Apelgren, currently coach at Sävehof.

- Now I have chosen Micke Apelgren.

A fantastically talented coach.

He has shown it in Elverum for several years and is doing well in Sävehof now.

He is hardworking, loyal and committed.

It feels very good.

We talk almost daily and have many meetings to get to know each other better.

It feels great!

Today, the national team gathers for the first time this season ahead of the home World Cup in January.

In the EHF Euro Cup, Germany awaits in Mannheim on Thursday and Denmark in Scandinavium on Sunday.
