Three times before, a team has won 9–0 in the Premier League: Manchester United against Ipswich in 1995 and against Southampton in 2021, and Leicester against Southampton in 2019.

Now Liverpool is joining that crowd.

Firminho scored five points

Roberto Firminho was the man of the first half.

First he served Luis Diaz with a nice cross.

Then he cheered up both Harvey Elliot and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who were each responsible for their long-range shots on goal.

Elliot burst into tears after his goal, which was his first in a Liverpool shirt.

Firminho then lunged forward and scored 4-0 himself, and before the break Virgil Van Dijk also headed in a corner.

- It was not the start of the season we had hoped for.

It was a big opportunity for us to turn the season around today.

We needed to win, and it was a special day for us, says Trent Alexander-Arnold in Viasat's broadcast after the match.

The overrun continued

The second half continued as the first ended.

After an own goal, another brace from Firminho and a debut goal from Fabio Carvalho, Liverpool loomed after the goal record with 10 minutes remaining in regular time.

And that would be achieved.

Luis Diaz headed in a corner in the 85th to tie rivals Manchester United's and Leicester's goalscoring records.

They never managed to reach double figures, but the home crowd at Anfield were probably quite satisfied with the effort anyway.
