Danish professional cyclist Jonas Vingegaard is on the verge of his first overall victory in the 109th Tour de France.

The 25-year-old from Team Jumbo-Visma brought his big lead over defending champion Tadej Pogacar to the finish in second place in the decisive individual time trial over 40.7 kilometers from Lacapelle-Marival to Rocamadour and drove anything but with the handbrake on.

Vingegaard's teammate Wout van Aert secured victory on the 20th and penultimate stage of the Tour of France.

The Belgian needed 47:59 minutes, which corresponds to an average speed of 50.9 kilometers per hour.

For the wearer of the green jersey it was the third day's victory on this year's tour.

Best German was Maximilian Schachmann in ninth place.

Pogacar was third, maintaining his second place overall ahead of former Tour champion Geraint Thomas (UK/Ineos Grenadiers), who finished fourth.

Pogacar had won the Tour of France for the past two years and went into this year's edition as the top favorite.

On the final stage on Sunday, there are traditionally no more attacks on the yellow jersey.

On Sunday morning, the peloton already starts in Paris for the Tour d'Honneur.

From the La Défense Arena, head west out of the city before heading to the city center via the Cote du Pavé des Gardes and doing the obligatory final laps on the Champs-Élysées.

The favorite to win after 115.6 kilometers is again all-rounder van Aert, who won there last year.
