For the first time ever, a woman will comment on the final of a soccer world championship on the German radio microphone on December 18, 2022.

According to a report in the “Bild” newspaper, ARD is honoring the life's work of soccer reporter Sabine Töpperwien with this decision.

The 60-year-old announced last Thursday that she would be retiring at the end of the month.

"I was blown away yesterday evening when our WDR program director presented me with this certificate as a farewell present from her ARD group," Töpperwien told the newspaper.

This decision was "an expression of my appreciation and my pioneering work for the next generation of women," said its director Valerie Weber.

She had been promised by certificate that the World Cup final in Qatar "should be commented on by a reporter on the ARD radio waves".

"I had said several times in interviews over the past few days that I would never see a woman broadcasting the finals for the radio or television at a European Football Championship or World Cup," explained Sabine Töpperwien.

The sister of the former ZDF sports reporter Rolf Töpperwien (70) mentioned health reasons for her departure.

She commented on over 700 soccer games, almost 600 of which were Bundesliga games.

In addition, she was the first woman in Germany to report live from a football stadium.
