Leader. The surprise of Portuguese Joao Almeida: Can the Giro de Rosa finish?
Stage 7.Triplete de Démare in a stage with fans
Briton Simon Yates has left the Giro d'Italia after testing positive for coronavirus, according to his team, Mitchelton-Scott.
"Yates developed very mild symptoms in the hours after stage seven," the statement said.
"The Mitchelton-Scott medical team immediately requested a rapid test which indicated a positive result. A second test, RT-PCR, was subsequently performed which confirmed the result."
Yates, who won the Tirreno-Adriatico just before the Giro, was 21st overall, 3:52 behind the leader, Portuguese Joao Almeida, after having lost more than three minutes on the first mountain stage.
Giro riders remain in a biosecure bubble when they are not on the road, just as they did in the Tour de France, which ended on September 20, with no rider testing positive during the French round.
On the Tour, two positive tests on a team in one week would cause the team to be expelled from the race, but this rule was not implemented at the Giro.
