  • Road Safety: How can compensation be calculated in the event of a traffic accident?

Driving on certain roads means doing it with the five senses. Not only for other vehicles or road conditions, but also for external factors such as the emergence of animals. Among all, the wild boar takes the palm. It is a species that has reproduced exponentially in recent years. It can pose a danger, not only in rural, but also urban environments. The lack of food makes some of these animals already part of the landscape of cities.

According to the IV Report of the Center for Ponle Freno-Axa Road Safety Studies , the number of accidents against animals increased by 21%, mainly due to the sharp increase in claims with wild boars, which grew 47% in the last two years . The study has taken into account 8,053 accidents caused by collision with animals .

Behind the wild boars, the dog or the roe deer exchanges the second and third position in the ranking of animals more dangerous for road safety, due to the increase in claims of the first (14%) and the decrease in the case of the second ( -5%). These three animals represent 83% of the total claims collected by the Pone Freno Axa Study Center.

By Autonomous Communities, Castile and León and Galicia are those that register a greater number of this type of accidents, with 22% and 20% of the total. Catalonia occupies the third place (12%), followed by Andalucía (8%), Castilla La Mancha and Aragón (both with 6% of the total). By provinces, Burgos is in the lead, mainly due to the impact of the roe deer. In this province there is 21% of the total accidents against this animal.

Galicia, leading the way in claims with wild boars

Behind Burgos, in the 'top 10' of provinces with more accidents against animals, is Ourense (5.8%), which rises three positions, followed by the other three Galician provinces: A Coruña (5.4%) , Lugo (5.4%) and Pontevedra (4.2%). The authors of the report highlight the unique case of Murcia, CCAA in which there are more accidents against dogs from all over Spain, representing 88% . Murcia equals Pontevedra at the head of the provinces with more accidents against domestic animals.

With regard to the problem of wild boar, Galicia brings together the largest number of claims (27% ) and have grown in the last year by 67%. In Catalonia, second with a 20% share, they grow 32%. Castilla y León is the only community in the top 5 that hardly registers changes (4%), remaining third (14% of the total). In fact, Aragón (with a share of 8%) grows 32% and Asturias, fifth with a weight of 6%, registers the most significant increase (112%). By provinces the accident rate is more dispersed. The 'top 5', composed of Ourense, A Coruña, Lugo, Barcelona and Girona represents 35% of the total and the 'top 10', 59%.

December, the worst month

The last month of the year is the most dangerous month of the year, registering at 11.8% of the total accidents. On the contrary, June, with 6.6%, is the month in which fewer accidents are recorded, with a decrease of 79% compared to December.

For days, Sunday is the most dangerous, registering 16.1% of accidents, followed by Monday (15%) and Saturday (14.8%). Most accidents are concentrated during the night or in hours with low light. Specifically, between 7:00 and 7:00, 59% of the incidents are recorded. From 00:00 to 07:00 hours 26% of accidents occur, despite being a strip with lower traffic concentration.
