When Nya Raketskolan was completed ten years ago, it was described as "Sweden's most modern learning environment" by the then Social Democratic leadership of the Children and Education Committee.

The classrooms were built for as many as 40 students and glass walls would give an open and inviting feeling.

The environment has been heavily criticized by both parents and the political opposition over the years. The design of the school will now be investigated. This emerged at a press conference attended by Head of School Viktoria Björklund, Deputy Director Markus Forsberg and the new chairman of the Children and Education Committee Emilia Töyrä (S).

"I note that we have quality deficiencies and we must investigate whether the premises provide the best conditions," says Viktoria Björklund.

Difficult to recruit staff

Kiruna now has only 56 per cent qualified compulsory school teachers and 25 per cent qualified preschool teachers. For example, Nya Raketskolan has tried for a long time to find a music teacher without success. Now they are trying to find new teaching methods.

"We need to both ensure that the students can make up for what they have missed and secure their livelihoods going forward. One model could be to introduce theme weeks in music," says Markus Forsberg.

It is not only teachers who are missing, but all possible staff within the school. Competition from industry has been cited as a cause of recruitment difficulties.
