Pakistan on Tuesday condemned India's decision to hold G20 meetings in the disputed region of Kashmir next month, calling the move "irresponsible".

The nuclear-armed neighbours claim full sovereignty over the territory but share its administration, and have fought two of their three wars for control.

India currently holds the rotating presidency of the G20 for a year and is due to host the leaders' summit in New Delhi in early September.

But the pre-summit programme includes meetings of the G20 and G20 in Srinagar, Kashmir's summer capital, and in the town of Leh in Ladakh region. These meetings will take place in April and May.

Pakistan's foreign ministry issued a statement condemning the choice of meeting venues in the disputed territories.

"India's irresponsible decision is the latest in a series of self-serving actions to perpetuate its illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir," it said.

The ministry accused India of "ignoring UN Security Council resolutions and violating the principles of the UN Charter and international law". "Pakistan strongly condemns (such resolutions)," she said.
