Pakistani strikes in Afghanistan reignite tensions between the two neighbors

Tensions are crystallizing between Pakistan and Afghanistan, after Pakistani strikes were carried out this Monday, March 18 in two Afghan border provinces.

Eight people were killed, according to the Taliban regime, which “strongly condemns these attacks” and denounces a “violation of the sovereignty” of its country.

Pakistan

has confirmed that it has carried out an operation in

Afghanistan

, saying it has targeted a terrorist group which regularly carries out attacks on its soil

.

These attacks may have consequences that Pakistan would not be able to control

,” reacted the spokesperson for the Taliban regime after the Pakistani strikes in the provinces of Paktika and Khost, both bordering Pakistan.

It is in these provinces that many members of armed groups, such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP), the Pakistani Taliban, have found refuge, according to Islamabad.

Still according to Islamabad, the TTP would have led several attacks from Afghan soil.

Monday's Pakistani strikes come two days after gunmen killed seven soldiers in northwest Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan.

President

Asif Ali Zardari

had promised a firm response.

Relations between the two neighbors are deteriorating against a backdrop of security threats.

The Taliban regime refuses any action against armed groups, such as the TTP, which target security forces and representatives of the Pakistani authority.

All attempts at dialogue on the subject carried out to date between various Pakistani officials and the Afghan Taliban have been unsuccessful.

Tensions have been recurring since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in 2021.
