In November last year, Rickie Koskela was driving into the port of Malmö. He chose to leave early to "avoid traffic". At Hemsögatan, another truck entered his lane in the opposite direction and collided head-on. The truck was completely destroyed and Rickie was trapped in the driver's seat.

"In the cab, I've been trapped with my head up in the cupboard and my legs on the dashboard," says Rickie Koskela.

No memory of the accident

He was sent to hospital and sedated. When he woke up, he didn't remember anything.

"I have a memory from two weeks after the incident. My memory has disappeared because of the brain haemorrhage I had. Because it crushed my skull in three places.

At the scene of the accident, things needed to go fast. According to the medical staff, the emergency services had ten minutes to take Rickie Koskela out – they did it in eight.

"He was in a very bad condition. The staff working at the scene of the accident were very experienced and competent, which most likely allowed Rickie to survive, says Kushtrim Rugova of the rescue service South.

Want to drive a truck again

Now Rickie is relatively recovered and gets to drive a car, but not a truck yet. The fact that he does not remember the accident, he says, is now to his advantage. This means that he does not have to relive it and can instead look ahead.

"If I had remembered, I wouldn't have gotten back in a truck, but right now I want nothing more than to drive a truck.
