Dead body travels 900 kilometers into the toilet of an Indian train

The body of a man was found in the toilet of an Indian train after traveling nearly 900 kilometers, Indian police said Thursday.

According to the authorities, the man most likely died shortly after boarding the train in the eastern state of Bihar, and remained for hours in the toilets.

Railroad police officer Ram Sahai told AFP that passengers on Sunday complained of a "really bad smell" coming from the toilets, until officers decided to remove the door.

By then, the train had traveled more than 900 kilometers in 24 hours.

"The door to the toilets was locked from the inside and when we opened it, we found the body," said Sahai, who works in Shah Jahanpur in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

"We don't know yet about this man. He probably got off the train at the sorting station two or three days before his body was discovered."

Press information indicated that this accident caused the train to be delayed for about five hours before completing its journey towards the city of Amritsar in the north of the country, after its departure from Saharsa, Bihar state.

A doctor collaborating with the railway authority said in statements reported by the newspaper "The Times of India", that the body was in a state of decomposition when it was found, and it appears that its owner "died after falling into a coma" when he was in the toilets.
