On Saturday morning, Ukraine allegedly carried out drone attacks against Sevastopol on the Kim Peninsula, the port where Russia's Black Sea Navy is stationed and which Russia occupied in 2014.

When SVT Nyheter talks to FOI expert Niklas Granholm on Saturday afternoon, he is cautious about commenting on the information because it has not yet been confirmed and the source is the Russian Ministry of Defense.

- If this information, which is preliminary and difficult to confirm at this early stage, is correct, it means that the Russian Black Sea Navy is further weakened.

However, he says that in that case it could be an important success for Ukraine.

- It is a type of ship that has the capacity to shoot the so-called Kalibr robots, which have been used to shoot at targets inside Ukraine from the sea.

That ability is weakened further.

Psychological success

Research leader Granholm says that even the information about the drone attack can be an important psychological success for Ukraine.

- Admiral Makarov, as it appears, is the flagship of the Black Sea Navy, which replaced the cruiser Moskva that was sunk in April.

Losing a flagship is very important and a loss of prestige for the Russian Black Sea Navy.

The frigate Makarov also has other important functions, says Niklas Granholm.

- The capability of this ship is also that it has an advanced air defense function that has disappeared, it all depends on whether the ship is damaged, hit or completely knocked out.

If it is drones – what kind of drone is it likely to be?

- If the information is correct, it could be drones that fly in the air and attack from the air, but it could also be drones that move on the sea, on the water surface or under the water surface.

Export of grain

On Saturday afternoon, Russia also announced that it was withdrawing from the agreement on the export of grain from Ukraine.

According to the agreement between the occupying power Russia and Ukraine, cargo ships from three ports - Odessa, Pivdenny and Chornomorsk - must be guaranteed safe passage through the Black Sea.
