The Center Party is among the big losers in this year's parliamentary elections.

The party is retreating more than anything else and now gathers 6.7 percent of the voters, compared to 8.6 percent in 2018. The party is also losing many of its core voters in the countryside, which according to Lööf himself is due to not being able to "reach" with its politics.

- Here we need to do an investigation ourselves, says the C leader in Aktuellt.

Had stayed "a number of years"

However, the poor result is not the main reason why Lööf chooses to resign.

According to the C leader herself, it is more about the fact that she has now been in office for eleven years - more than any other party leader apart from Jimmie Åkesson (SD).

- It has been a long time in Swedish politics where the political landscape but also Sweden and the outside world have changed a lot.

I think it's time to hand over the baton.

Having said that, the election result also plays into the decision.

Had Andersson's (S) team won a majority, Lööf envisions that she would have been able to stay "a number of years", she says.

- Now the Center Party will be a powerful liberal opposition, and then I felt that the sooner I step down, the more time my successor gets to shape his team and his politics going forward.

Hatred and threats

Another reason for the defection can be found in the hatred and threats that Annie Lööf was subjected to in her role as party leader.

She herself describes the hatred as "extremely serious" and specifically mentions that she was a target for the man who murdered SKR's psychiatry coordinator Ing-Marie Wieselgren during Almedal Week.

- It is very upsetting and has affected me and my family deeply.

Then it is not the main reason why I choose to resign, but it is clear that it matters.

I am a mother of two young children and want a more normal existence, says Lööf.
