• High temperatures Another 58-year-old worker dies from heat stroke in the Aurgi de Móstoles workshop

  • Madrid Hospitalized in serious condition an operator of the City Council cleaning service after suffering a heat stroke

Unions and cleaning companies in the city of

Madrid

have agreed this Tuesday night on a protocol for action in the

event of heat waves

and which, among other issues, includes eliminating the afternoon shift in manual sweeping services when temperatures are high.

The evening workers will move to the morning.

The protocol, in this sense, establishes three scenarios --green, yellow and orange-- in the face of heat waves, according to the data and information provided by the

AEMET

.

In the case of yellow alert situations, different measures will be applied, such as not using sweepers and shovels that do not have air conditioning;

eliminate clearing work;

deliver sun protection cream to daytime shifts and mandatory use of the cap in sunny areas;

and allow the use of blowers in specific situations of the service (markets, flea markets, etc) "trying not to prolong their use" and in a "minimum crew of two or more people that allows alternation".

The mixed sweep will also be carried out with electric blowers;

the afternoon shift will be moved to the time slot from 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.

, "with the exception of immediate action teams";

and vehicles with air conditioning will be prioritized.

In the case of vehicles without air, there will be a

10-minute break

in a shaded place, after an hour and a half of work.

The snack break will be from 8:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

In the orange scenario, of maximum alert, the measures of the previous level will be applied and vehicles without air conditioning will not be removed.

In addition, the manual sweeping services of the afternoon shift will be brought forward to the morning shift of the same day, "changing shifts to the corresponding workers."

Regarding clothing, the agreement states that

"the quality of the clothing will be negotiated by the parties

. "

"The unfortunate death that we experienced last Saturday cannot be allowed again. That is why we have urged the signing of an agreement between employers and unions to establish special conditions in a heat wave. Thank you all for having made it possible," he said. affirmed the mayor of the capital,

José Luis Martínez-Almeida

, in a message published on social networks.

The protocol, signed by

ASELIP, UGT-SP, CCOO del Hábitat and CGT

, has its scope of application in the summer season, in general, in the period from June 1 to September 15, both inclusive.

The Special Urgent Service of Madrid (SELUR)

will have "a health and safety guard" to control and monitor "prevention measures against heat stress".

On the other hand, it establishes a series of general recommendations, such as hydration, avoiding sugary drinks or prioritizing cool and shady places, in addition to adjusting the sweep path to avoid "sun areas at times of greatest intensity", among other suggestions.

The agreement comes after a 60-year-old worker died last Friday after suffering heat stroke while working on cleaning tasks on

San Diego Avenue in Puente de Vallecas

.

This Tuesday, in addition, a 58-year-old Madrid cleaning service worker is in serious condition after having suffered heat stroke while working on a street in the

Arganzuela

district .
