High summer temperatures must have contributed to the snow up in the mountains melting and causing the chaotic scenes in the national park, local media reports.

- These are floods that we have never seen in our lifetime, says meteorologist Cory Mattice to AP.

Evacuations are underway and several tourists have been stranded in Gardiner, Montana, where the house seen in the clip above fell into the Yellowstone River.

The decision to close all entrances is the first of its kind since 1988 when devastating forest fires ravaged the area.

No people were reported dead or injured on Tuesday afternoon local time.

According to the AP, only a small group of hikers will remain in the park on Tuesday evening.
