Fennovoima's nuclear power project in Pyhäjoki - on the other side of the Kvarken - is considered suspended, reports YLE.

Fennovoima, which is the developer, is 34 percent owned by a Finnish subsidiary of the Russian company Rosatom.

Rosatom is owned by the Russian state and handles the nuclear energy in Russia, but also the uranium used for nuclear weapons, reports YLE.

In addition to Prime Minister Marin's statement that Finland should hurry to free itself from Russian energy dependence, Minister of Trade and Industry Mika Lintilä has also said that he will not grant a building permit for the planned nuclear power plant.

Since the plans became known, the construction of a new nuclear power plant has been criticized by a number of municipalities and organizations in Sweden.
