Nuremberg (dpa / lby) - Nasser Ahmed is the new chairman of the SPD in Nuremberg.

The 32-year-old prevailed on Saturday with a clear lead over his competitor Gabriela Heinrich.

One year after the lost mayor election, he now wants to help the Social Democrats in Bavaria's second largest city to make a fresh start.

Immediately after the election, Nasser announced that he wanted to reposition the party in terms of content and structure.

"We have to communicate faster and more modernly," he said.

In addition, the party must differentiate itself more clearly from the Union and the Greens.

"The social must come to the fore."

With 126 to 52 votes, the vote of the around 200 delegates at the digital annual general meeting, according to the SPD, was clearly in favor of Nasser.

He did not expect such a clear victory, he said afterwards.

The greater his joy, but the more he feels the responsibility.

"My predecessors have followed in great footsteps," he admitted.

The political scientist with a doctorate and the son of Eritrean immigrants does not take on an easy legacy in the former SPD stronghold of Nuremberg.

The popular SPD mayor Ulrich Maly ruled there for 18 years.

But when he did not run again in the local elections last year, SPD boss Thorsten Brehm entered the race - and lost to today's Lord Mayor Marcus König from the CSU.

Brehm then declared that he would give up the SPD party chairmanship.

Nasser announced that he wanted to define the program for the next two years as soon as possible at a retreat by the SPD executive committee.

"I would like to set the course very soon."

He will be supported by Kerstin Gardill and Bernd Hampel as deputy chairmen.
