Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and the Democratic Party have made a radical left turn, according to previous statements by the Trump campaign.

- Do you want to be controlled by the radical left-wing mafia, or do you want to stand strong as free men and women and keep it that way? said, among others, US President Donald Trump at an election rally last week.

According to Daniel Cox, research assistant at the American Enterprise Institute, this is true.

- There is no doubt that the Democratic Party in recent years has gained more liberal political views on a number of issues. The candidate Joe Biden 2020 is more liberal than the candidate Joe Biden was in 2008, says Daniel Cox, to SVT.

Liberal election manifesto

At the Democrats' convention, the election manifesto was adopted, which Vermont senators Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden collaborated on to work out. But the left wing of the Democrats got through far from everything they wanted. There was no free university, less money for the police or general health insurance in the election manifesto that was adopted. Mainly because there is currently no support for moving further left, according to Daniel Cox.

- It is mostly a small group of activists who lobby for this type of more extreme proposals, says Daniel Cox.

But the manifesto is still described as the most liberal ever with proposals to decriminalize marijuana use, and with far more ambitious and costly climate policy proposals than four years ago. And during this spring's primary election in the United States, a number of more liberal candidates for Congress have won over their more center-right Democrat colleagues.

"Many of the ideas we fought for, which were seen as radical four years ago, are now seen as mainstream," said Bernie Sanders, one of the Democrats on the far left.

Republicans moved more over time

One of the reasons why Republicans call the change within the Democrats "radical" may be that the Republican Party itself has clearly moved in the opposite direction over the past 40 years, says Daniel Cox.

"The United States is extremely polarized and has been for some time, but the Republican Party has moved much more ideologically compared to the Democrats," Cox said.
